Until high school, Romeo & Juliet was almost always advertised to me as a deeply romantic and beautiful play. When high school hit, I learned that is not the case. The fact of the matter is that it’s a rather insane tragical tale about two lusty teenagers who barely know each other and are willing to do anything for their “love”. It is so ridiculous that to me it becomes comical as the story goes on. Aside from the language barrier put up by the time period and the ridiculousness of the plot, it is a classic nonetheless and I do appreciate it for its artistic value. Tragedies were very common in Shakespeare’s time and I think it is one of those plays that creates such crazed characters that the tragedy just falls right into place. I personally have only read it in book form and have never seen the play in its original form, so I unfortunately can’t speak for how it works on stage. That being said, it is a play that has such an adaptable plot that it can be rearranged into a wide array of potential settings and plots. There have been countless adaptations that prove this, which are more along the lines of what I have personally encountered such as Romeo + Juliet, Gnomeo & Juliet, and even that Taylor Swift song that put its own twist on the story. After some research, I even learned that there have been anime movies, Bollywood movies, and other adaptations that have been done around the world. I feel that these adaptations are what have kept this play alive for so long because it is always changing and becoming something new and interesting even though it is the same plot that is known worldwide. Because it has been done in its original form so many times and it is such an easy story to work with, I too plan to redirect the overall setting of the play and make it into something new. I hope it has not been done before, but I imagine Romeo & Juliet working out very well as a tale taking place in the Old West. Romeo would be a poor cattle rancher working his family’s ranch and trying to make ends meet instead of the original idea of the Montagues being a wealthy

family. The only thing he will be the heir to is a cattle ranch, while Juliet will be from a family that comes from old money and lives a much more sophisticated lifestyle. The families would
