I agree that we, as advanced practice nurses, must show due diligence in both treating and prescribing medications. This is achieved by obtaining a complete medical history, preforming a complete physical assessment, and developing a treatment plan for the patient. Furthermore, the complete medical history should include any food/drug allergies, past medical/surgical history, medication list, and even a list of previously drugs used to treat the same or similar complaint that did or did not work. The complete physical assessment could include such tests as a CBC, CMP, U/A, EKG, chest x-ray depending on the requested drug. Finally, the patient should be involved in the development of the plan of treatment. Our responsibility as nurse practitioners (NPs) is to collect data by con- ducting a comprehensive history and performing a complete physical assessment before any drug
