Hindbrain- medulla, pons, cerebellum MEDULLA - Function: controls autonomic functions (breathing, vomiting, heart rate…) Location: lower portion of brain stem (inferior to pons + anterior to cerebellum). PONS- Function: arousal, sleep, assists in controlling autonomic function, relays sensory info btwn cerebrum and cerebellum. Location: portion of the brainstem that’s superior to the medulla CEREBELLUM - Function: balance, equilibrium, sensory-motor, cognition, learning, and fine movement coordination. Location: above brainstem, beneath occipital lobes at the base of the skull RAPHE SYSTEM- Function: arousal and sensory motor Location: in brain stem RETICUAR FORMATION- Function: Arousal, attention, cardiac reflexes, motor functions, sleep, relays signals to the cerebral cortex. Location: group of nerve fibers inside the brainstem 2. Midbrain - consists of Tectum and Tegmentum . -TECTUM- Function: controls auditory and visual responses, consists of Superior colliculus (visual) and Inferior colliculus (auditory). Location- dorsal midbrain.
