Lori ColeEDU280-EC162Literacy Examination 4/1/10First SectionThe question I chose is what is the role of motivation in learning to read and write? Ichose this question because I would like to know how teachers can motivate children toread. If there is some way to intervene with adolescent students who are still strugglingwith reading, overcome their lack of motivation to try, and actually get them to practicetheir skills, develop fluency, build their vocabulary, and develop comprehensionstrategies, then those students will eventually reach a criterion that we describe as"proficient" or "literate." The trick with some struggling readers is to overcome thatmotivation hurdle -- to break through the walls the student has created, and instill newliteracy habits that become ingrained into that student's daily life. When students makea habit of using text as a tool every day, the rest will largely take care of itself. Thetypical struggling reader in 3rd grade will probably struggle their whole life because theyhave reached the point of frustration, they lacks intrinsic motivation, and the school theyattend may provide less and less external motivation and opportunities tolearn. Analysis of field notes, teacher interviews, and childinterviews suggests children's motivation for literacy is best understood in terms ofdevelopment in specific contexts. Development in literacy skill and teachers' methods ofinstruction and raising motivation provided affordances and constraints for literateactivity and its accompanying motivations.[Nol07]Second article is titled “Understanding Our Roleas Teachers: Facing the Challenges ofHelping All Students Learn to Read and Write.” "Teaching to the middle" will leave some
