COLANDREOLAB REPORT 7MICAELA COLANDREOPARTNER QIAN LIU QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF GROUP 2CATIONS UNKNOWNDATE 3/29/17CHEM 127 SEC 121781
COLANDREOPURPOSE:To use qualitative analysis and experiments that will validate the presence of group two cations ( Bi3+, Cu2+, Cd2+, and Sn4+) in an unknown solution.FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE BEHIND THIS EXPERIMENT:Similarly to last lab we will be using the method of selective precipitation in order to identify certain cations present in our solution. Last week we did this exact procedure with a known solution and were able to identify positive results for the presence of all four cations. This week we are performing these same tests on an unknown mixture assigned to us, and using our knowledge from last lab will be able to identify which cations are present based on positive test results. A cation owns more protons than electrons. The reagents used in today’s lab include NH3, HCl, NH4Cl, HNO3,KOH, and thioacetamide. Qualitative analysis or observable changes is what we will be using to identify these changes in our solution.
