Text Pages 87-103 and 104-125 Law Enforcement Agencies o There are 19,000 police agencies at the national, state, county, and municipal  levels. They employ a total of more than one million people, sworn and unworn.  o Federal Agencies:  Federal law enforcement agencies are part of the executive  branch of the national government. They investigate a specific set of crimes  defined by Congress. o The FBI:  The Federal Bureau of Investigation is an investigative agency  within the US Dept. of Justice with the power to investigate all federal  crimes not placed under the jurisdiction of other agencies.  1. The FBI places greater emphasis on five areas: White-collar  crime, organized crime, terrorism, foreign intelligence operations  in the US, and political corruption. o Specialization in Federal Law Enforcement  2. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA):  which assists state  and local authorities in investigating the illegal use and importation  of controlled drugs. 3. Internal Revenue Service (IRS):  Pursues violations of tax laws. 4. Bureau if Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms:  Deals with alcohol,  tobacco, and gun control.  5. The Secret Service:  covers counterfeiting, forgery and protection  of the president. 6. The Bureau of Postal Inspection of the Postal Service:  Mail  offenses. 7. Customs Service:  Smuggling and border security.  8. US Coast Guard 9. National Parks Service o Federal Agencies after September 11 o The creation of the Department of Homeland Security. o The reordering of crime control policies away from street crime and drugs  to international and domestic terrorism.  o A great increase of federal money to pursue the war against terrorism. o The Department of Homeland Security:  1. Border and Transportation Security  2. Emergency Preparedness and Response 3. Science and Technology 4. Information Analysis and Infrastructure Protection
