For this assignment, I decided to observe a child that I’m related to, so it would be extra easy over thanksgiving break to observe them. I observed J, a barely three year old little girl. She is the youngest of three children and the only girl in her family (besides her mom). The observation took place on Thanksgiving Day from 1:30-2:30 pm. The location of this observation was at another one of our relatives houses, for a Thanksgiving late lunch/early dinner. There were many other relatives at this house, including six other children, two being J’s brothers, ages 6 and 8, and the others being cousins, one girl, age 16, and three boys, ages 7, 10, and 14. One of the rooms in the relative’s house was “set aside” for the children to play in. It was a spare bedroom in the house, and it had bunk beds, a TV with a video game system, an end table with a lamp, and a closet full of assorted toys in it like Barbie’s, racecars, and coloring books and crayons. J started out playing on the floor very quietly by herself with the Barbie she had brought from home, staying very close to her brothers though, as if she was unfamiliar with the other children in the room. Even though her brothers would continually push her away from them, she would hover pretty closely for about 15 minutes. After talking about it in lecture, I’ve come to realize that J has a very secure attachment with her brothers (Lecture 21). You can really tell that she is much more comfortable with one of them near her when she doesn’t know (or automatically recognize) other people in the room also. J then starts playing quietly with the Barbie she brought again. One of her brothers then points out that there is more Barbie stuff in the closet. She tried to get the box out by herself, but she was unable to since the box was too big and heavy and her hands are so small. She asked her 1
