1.3 Midpoint and Distance Formulas
Objectives Objectives: Bisect a segment. Use the Midpoint Formula Use the Distance Formula
Midpoint The point that bisects a segment. Bisects ? splits into 2 equal pieces A M B 12x+3 10x+5 12x+3=10x+5 2x=2 x=1
Always Remember! Always Remember! If they are congruent, then set their measures equal to each other! Look for the “hatch marks” on the figures to identify congruent parts.
Segment Bisector A segment, ray, line, or plane that intersects a segment at its midpoint. A B M k
Compass & Straightedge These simple tools can be used to find the midpoint and to construct other important points. We actually don’t NEED a ruler (or a protractor if we’re creating a special angle); just something to draw straight lines with, and a compass will do! l
Midpoint Formula Used for finding the coordinates of the midpoint of a segment in a coordinate plane.
