Chandler Morse 9/4/2018 ENGL Prof. Sircy The Toll of America’s Obesity David Ludwig, a pediatrician, and Kenneth Rogoff, an economist, argue that obesity and the rate of diabetes being diagnosed is a affect from the lack of discipline in Americans, and the lack of fiscal help from the political assembly. They talk about how now in America that more and more teens (among people of other ages) are becoming obese and/or have diabetes. The correlation between other, “weight-related complications like hypertension, fatty liver, orthopedic problems, sleep apnea and Type 2 diabetes are bad enough when they strike in middle age” says Ludwig & Rogoff. They explain the budgeting that goes into research behind these diseases, and how it affects those with low income, poor health, and the government looking for grants to give hospitals to have more funding for research and “cures”. “Obesity doesn’t just hurt individuals pocketbooks; it also affects the national budget deficit” is the first sentence of one of the paragraphs from Ludwig & Rogoff, meaning that this is pretty significant.
