The United States was way ahead of other countries in regards to civilian passenger travel during thistime period. The race basically came in to play when the U.S.S.R. first launched their Sputnik I on 4October 1957 (Bilstein, 2001). This caused somewhat of a frenzy for the United States, because whilethey were making progress with the satellite program, they were falling rapidly behind the U.S.S.R.withactually getting satellites into orbit. By the time the first U.S. satellite was successfully launched intoorbit, the Russians had already launched their second Sputnik, with a dog on board into space (Bilstein,2001).
