Counselor: Hi Mary, I’m Deandra I am a Licensed Professional Counselor hear at the RICH Clinic, what brings you in today? Mary: Well, after my husband passed away and left me as a single mother life has become increasingly overwhelming for me. Counselor: So I’m hearing that you have been left with the burden of being a single mother after the passing of your husband. Tell me more.Mary: Yeah, I’m just so stressed. My husband passed away suddenly after having a heart attack last yearand since then I have been having difficulty with maintaining my everyday life taking care of our two boys without any assistance. Throughout the past year, I have started drinking two bottles of wine a night and I feel like I can’t relax or get to sleep at night without it.Counselor: Do you feel anxious or restless at night without drinking before bed?Mary: Completely, I tried one night to not drink before going to bed and I just laid there for hours. I honestly can’t get any rest without at least “downing” a bottle. It’s difficult for me not to drink, especiallywhen it is the only thing that brings me comfort right now.Counselor: Yeah. You feel more relaxed.Mary: For sure.Counselor: It sounds as though you would like to stop drinking and you realize how it can affect your everyday life, although it’s been difficult for you.Mary: It’s been more than difficult, I have no real friends or close family for support so that makes it hard.Counselor: What else have you tried to help relieve your stress and feelings of being overwhelmed?Mary: Well, I tried talking to my co-workers and that didn’t really help. I used to exercise often, althoughI have stopped because I no longer have anyone to watch my boys so that I can go to the gym.Counselor: So it sounds like you enjoy exercising, although have a hard time finding someone to assist you with watching your children to be able to go to the gym?Mary: Yeah, exactly I have a 5 year old and a 3 three old. There is no way I can bring them with me to the gym and actually get anything accomplished. I think if I were able to exercise more often to “blow off some steam” it would help me with being able to relax more in the evenings.
