Precious Miller U.S History Harriet Tubman’s Greatest Achievement(s) Sometime in the late 1840’s to early 50’s, slavery began to take a huge turn. In the year of 1822, Harriet Tubman was born into slavery, but by the year of 1849, she made a life changing decision that has affected the lives of most slaves. “Liberty or death,” was the only two options she had, as she saw it; “If I could not have one, I would have the other,” and this lead her to run away from slavery. By this time, between the years of 1849 and ‘63, and moments during the Civil War, Harriet Tubman’s greatest achievements vary from her rescue mission, the river raid, and her time spent nursing. During the time into the Civil War, Harriet Tubman was asked by the governor of Massachusetts to join the Union troops in South Carolina. The task was for her to leak intelligence to the troops about the whereabouts of the fugitive slaves to free them. This was known as the Combahee River raid, and it was conducted on June 2, 1863.
