Maximizing the information collected through the POS system can assist the company in anticipating changes in demand, and targeting customers. The Chief Information Officer of Alliance Supermarkets is seeking insight as to how use the gathered information to identify demand patterns, and target customers for promotions and sales.Alliance is tracking inventory with POS and UPC applications, these systems use an automated communication system. As deliveries arrive and are received into the system via the scanning process, inventory levels are automatically updated. As cashiers are scanning bar codesas the checkout registers, they system will reflect any necessary decreases in the inventory amounts.Inventory and PurchasingMaximization of the POS and UPC tools will assist in communications between internal and external customers. Programming can be completed that will supply real time purchasing data to internal purchasing, sales and inventory departments and external vendors. One avenue for improvement includes automated ordering based upon threshold levels. This predetermined threshold will consider lead time and minimum ordering quantities for each vendor and product. Alliance will then have visibility of the advance notice needed to prevent stock outs (Vonderembse & White, 2013, Sec. 10.2, para. 5). As the system reaches the defined threshold, communication is initiated with the purchasing department.
