Brandon Comiskey-Lucero Chem 121L Section 8 August 28, 2018 Partner: Raymond Paper Chromatography of a Metal Cation Mixture Abstract: In the lab, we determined which cations were in the mystery mixture by using chromatographic paper to observe the different affinities that the cations exhibited. The cation’s that ended up being in the mystery mixture was Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ . Introduction: In the lab we utilized chromatographic paper to measure the affinity of the different cations. We did this in order to figure out what cations were in the aqueous solution. Once the experiment was complete we compare the distance traveled by the cations including the mystery mixture and see how the mystery mixture compares to the other cations. Experimental Data: First, we created a mixture for the chromatographic paper to bathe in. This consisted of 19 mL of acetone and 8 mL of HCL inside of a 1000 mL beaker. We placed dots on the chromatographic paper of each solution and put the paper in the beaker.
