Assimilation- the process of taking in and fully understanding information or ideas. Cultural assimilation is the process in which a minority group or culture comes to resemble those of a dominant group. Asylee- a person who is seeking or has been granted political asylum. Biculturalism- in sociology describes the co-existence, to varying degrees, of two originally distinct cultures. Cultural adaptation- the process and time it takes a person to integrate into a new culture and feel comfortable within it. A person in this position may encounter a wide array of emotions that the theory describes in four different stages. This includes the honeymoon, culture shock, recovery, and adjustment stages. Culture shock- the feeling of disorientation experienced by someone who is suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes. Expatriate- a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country other than their native country. Integration- Maintaining important parts of one’s original culture as well as participating fully in a new culture. Marginalization- treatment of a person, group, or concept as insignificant or peripheral. Oleh- A Jew immigrating into Israel under the Law of Return; plural is olim Refugee- a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. Reverse culture shock- the emotional and psychological distress suffered by some people when they return home after a number of years overseas. This can result in unexpected difficulty in readjusting to the culture and values of the home country, now that the previously familiar has become unfamiliar.
