On a foggy day it is hard to distinguish left from right, but as soon as the fog lifts, the clarity is comparable to a blind person seeing for the first time. Distortion is that fog, but once it lifts the true meaning of the worth of wartime life is revealed. In the novel Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, distortion creeps in every line of the book except for one chapter: Snowden. Using hyperbole to describe how Major Major feels losing his identity, and later omitting distortion to expose Yossarian’s impact over Snowden, reveals how war revokes the identity of a soldier. The hyperbole of Major Major Major’s comedic name and behavior distorts the explosive impact of changing his personal name to a rank. Major Major Major as a child is known as Caleb Major, but when “enrolling in kindergarten … the discovery of his real name [was] made, and then the effects were disastrous” (84). The “disastrous” effects are that “[w]hat playmates he had withdrew from him and never returned” because they are told to “distrust all stranger[s]” and that “[t]he news killed his mother” (84-85).
