Szablicki Institute of Power Systems and Control Silesian University of Technology Gliwice, Poland Abstract — The paper presents the defined conception of the agent structure of the multi-agent system that performs the tasks of power system protection. The required input data sets and the input agents that provide observability of the power system were determined. The paper also proposes the agent input data acquisition ways that allow fast access to power system status information. The proposal of agents’ attributes that define their functionality in spatially and layered distributed structure of the multi-agent systems was also discussed. The paper presents also the simulation results evolving from the implementation of the agents’ functionalities in the digital power line distance protections. I NTRODUCTION The observed development of electric power systems (PS) is characterized inter alia by the Smart Grid functionalities implementations attempts and the progressive distribution of the power generation sector. The above mentioned cause the changes in power networks functionalities. This require power automation of high complexity. In particular, it concerns the power system protection (PSP). In [1] and [2] it is given that the development of the PSP is the basic requirement for the success in the accepted PS development implementation. This determines the necessity for modification in approach to the manner of the PSP operation. In many cases the existing structures of the PSP are unable to properly fulfill the entrusted tasks (see inter alia in [3], [4] and [5]). This threatens the safety of the PS. The withdrawal from the classical PSP is inevitable. Their operation idea was first of all based on input signals exclusively coming from the local protection points localized within the protected power system element. It gives too poor information necessary for the proper power object operating status definition. One of the means to improve the operation of the PSP may be the area automation systems. Structure of this systems based on multi-agent systems and the adaptive techniques. However, based on the bibliography studies it can be concluded that few attempts in formulation of multi-agent PSP concept were most of all restricted to control automation of the PS. The functionalities of such automation systems are usually insufficient for the proper PSP tasks’ fulfilment. Previous proposals of the PSP multi-agent systems were focusing mainly on the cooperation and coordination of the existing protections and not on the solution search which would allow to utilize the possibilities of the multi-agent system. The guidelines for the formulation of such a PSP multi-agent system were described inter alia in [6].
