Initial Post. Placebos on drug withdrawal trials In 1998, the Boston Globe and New York Times that research misconduct in studies involving mentally ill patient population and families were conducted. Adequate surveillance of patients in drug withdrawal and placebo trials resulting in the need for participant restraint, psychotic-symptom exacerbation, and even suicide was reported (Spath, 2007). Placebos are utilized in clinical trials to gain more knowledge about pharmacologic agents and to study disease and symptom response. It was also added that scientists believed that placebo is significant to provide clear information and data in specific population on the effectivity and/or side effects while controlling for the variables on patient expectation and belief (Spath, 2007). However, high placebo-response rates, ranging from 23% to 50% in pharmacologic studies on the mentally ill, have added to the controversy surrounding placebo use with the mentally ill and demonstrates the complications of the findings of new treatments based on sound scientific methods while also guarantees patient safety (Spath, 2007).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
