Preston Mboob Professor Geekie Composition II 12/6/16 Oral History In 1999 biographical film October Sky based off the true events of Homer Hickam’s life, a group of friends from a small coal mining town in West Virginia first witnessed the launch of the Russian satellite Sputnik into orbit during the late 1950’s . This spectacular and historical event would be the first man made object to leave earth and begin the Space Race. This would inspire Homer and his friends to build and launch rockets of their own. Homer would later in his life become a NASA engineer because of the inspiring events of the Space Race he witnessed in his youth (October Sky.). For this paper I have decided to research the events of the Space Race and the type of effects it had on the United States and the Midwest ’s point of view on those events. I have interviewed my grandmother and her husband about the events of their life during the decade of the Space Race and what their perspective was at the time of these historical events being from some small town in Kansas. During the years of 1957 and 1969 during the Cold War epidemic between the United States and the Soviet Union, the two countries would compete in scientific advancement of space exploration which would later be named the Space Race.
