Running head: MINDFULNESS AND ITS EFFECT 1 MINDFULNESS AND ITS EFFECT ON THIS ORGANIZATION AS A COMMUNITY Jillian K. Peralta American Military University 16 January 2017
MINDFULNESS AND ITS EFFECT 2 The corporate and public sector have recently taken notice and practiced mindfulness training, even though the term harks back to an ancient Buddhist philosophy. Mindfulness originated in the ancient Buddhist concept to exercise self-awareness and instructed individuals to concentrate on the present (Schumpeter. (2013, Nov 16). Many high profile businesses, including Aetna, Google, and Proctor and Gamble are realizing the positive outcomes of mindfulness that translates to their bottom line (Antanaitis, 2015). However, the concern is how companies are exercising mindfulness may not be used in the altruistic way the Buddhist monks originally intended. Businesses are leveraging mindfulness as a strategy against their competitors in these times of globalization and cut-throat environment. This paper illustrates through past research that contribute to positive correlation with mindfulness training and improved workforce readiness. This current organization may not widely recognize it as mindfulness, but still exercises the philosophy in spirit. Achieving self-awareness in this organization is not a new concept, but repackaged into more familiar concepts, better known as resiliency or adaptive learning. Programs offered such as “ Strong Bonds” help reinforce commitment and communication to married couples, which translates to healthy and more focused employees (cite). Financial workshops build skill sets for workers’ personal long term goals, and have shown improvement in an individuals’ emotional well-being (cite).
