CASE STUDY ANALYSIS USING METAPHORS 2 Case Study Analysis Using Metaphors Under Understanding how organizations are structured can seem very simple to an outside observer, but often time it’s not that easy. Morgan compares organizations as a brain, in that it is a complex organ that sends data signals to the rest of our bodies. [Van08] The easiest way to describe an organization, by and large, is to look at it as a “Computer”; a complex system (motherboard) that’s designed to increase efficiency and production. In comparison, like brains and computers, organizations are structured to have a central leader or team leaders that drive productivity both inside and outside the organization. Due to the complexity of organizations, Morgan brings clarity to understanding how organizations operate by linking them to metaphors. This case study will access two articles that further explore metaphors. Case 1 In review of article, Organizational metaphors and sustainable development: enabling or inhibiting , the authors examine the dominance of machine and organism metaphors in organizational studies, arguing that metaphors impede progress towards sustainable development. [Bar13] The article further asserts that metaphors is self-fulfilling that impact perception and actions. The authors describe metaphors as a organizational phenomenon, which occur as a result of two issues: 1) organizational members are viewed as components of a larger machine over individual humans, and 2) the organization is recognized as the center of existence.
