ASSIGNMENT 3 AVM4700 CAMPBELL 2 Assignment 3 Question 1: As most hours-building time takes place in small GA aircraft, does the 1500-hour rule prepare pilots to be better airline pilots? Is it possible that bad habits could be learned during that time? Answer: There are two main reasons I believe that the 1500-hour rules does not better prepare pilots for airline operations, and the main factors of the accident where missed. First of all, if we examine the original incident that created the chain of events which led to passing of the rule, both pilots had well over 1500 hours, the captain had accumulated 3379 hours while the first officer had 2244 hours. So, when it comes to overall experience both pilots where well qualified. The incident which occurred was a crash on final due to an aerodynamic stall. The captain and the first officer where not correctly utilizing crew resource management and allowed the aircraft to become too slow on final. The captain incorrectly responded to the situation by pulling back on the yoke, therefore increasing the stall while the first officer retracted the flaps which would have increased the stalling speed, therefore again causing the aircraft to worsen its stall condition. Stall recovery is a private pilot maneuver and the first couple of performance maneuvers that a pilot learns during their training. I believe that the incident was worsen by the lack of sleep and working conditions which caused the flight crew to become confused and incorrectly diagnose and respond to the situation during that time of confusion. Secondly, airline operations are all done in multicrew scenarios on much more complex systems then what you would find in a small GA aircraft. So, I believe focusing on utilizing multicrew resources as well as more complex system through pilot training would be more beneficial than just requiring a set amount of total aircraft time. I don’t believe this rule is helpful to future airline aviators. I also do not believe that requiring the time would necessarily cause a pilot to develop bad habits either.
