AVM4700 ASSIGNMENT 1 3 AVM4700 Assignment 1 1) Explain why aviation grew so rapidly between 1903 and 1945, including the key events that you believe led to these advancements. a. I believe the two single largest contributors to the growth of aviation was World War I and World War II. Unfortunately, during times of war, we usually see great advancements in technologies, and aviation was no different. In 1914 WW I was the first catalyst of aviation. Aircraft were initially used for reconnaissance missions able to fly over the battlefield and provide a bird's eye view of the opponents. Later, being used for bombing missions and air to air combat. After the war, we ended up with a surplus of pilots. These pilots were able to advance aviation through their communities. In WWII, aviation no longer served as a supporting role and instead played a pivotal key to the victory of the Allies. Incredible advancement and technologies were developed during this period. For example, the first operational jet engine had been developed by the Germans towards the end of the war. 2) How is the Chicago Convention important in aviation today? List three ways in which the Convention impacts modern aviation. a. The Chicago convention of 1944 was a pivotal step forward for civil aviation. The conference lasted 37 days and involved 52-member states, and led to the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention). This convention established the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which was able to bring a single governing body to international civil aviation
