Jones 1 Vikki Sherrice Jones Professor Cox ENGL 1213: Unit 5 Jurassic Park Response Paragraphs 24 June 2018 In the lunch scene of Jurassic Park when Ian Malcolm says, “Gee, the lack of humility before nature that’s being displayed here, uh…staggers me” I believe he is meaning that Hammond and Gennar are showing no respect to nature at all (Jurassic Park). Hammond has created a park with the attitude of making money and showing off his power and importance in the scientific world. Had Hammond and Gennar been humble the park would have been obtainable to be seen by all classes of people. Being humble means to put other’s well-being above your own and realizing you are of no special consequence. They were not only lacking humility towards others but nature itself. Nature is by definition, according to the Cambridge dictionary, “the natural forces that control what happens in the world” (“nature”). In this sense, nature can be looked at as evolution or even God. So instead of Hammond realizing that “nature” had already gotten rid of the dinosaurs for a reason he decided to ignore this fact and show a lack of respect towards “nature” by bringing them back to life anyway. When Malcolm asks the question: “Don’t you see the danger, John, inherent in what you’re doing here?” then goes on to point out: “Genetic power is the most awesome force the planet’s ever seen – but you wield it like a kid that’s found his dad’s gun” (Jurassic Park). I believe Malcolm is trying to get Hammond to realize just how powerful and life altering what he is doing really is and the potential devastation it could cause if he continues.
