Jones 1 Vikki Sherrice Jones Professor Cox ENGL 1213: Unit 7 Discussion: Connecting Frankenstein to Jurassic Park 25 June 2018 In the lunch scene of Jurassic Park when Ian Malcolm says, “Gee, the lack of humility before nature that’s being displayed here, uh…staggers me” I believe he is meaning that Hammond and Gennar are showing no respect to nature at all. Just as Hammond created a park with the attitude of making money and showing off his power and importance in the scientific world; Victor created the creature with the attitude of He was like God, creating a creature and giving it life. He wanted to prove to the world of philosophers that he was smarter than them and more powerful. Victor, although he pondered shortly about not creating the creature, he ultimately let his emotions guide him to complete his work. Had “nature” wanted creatures, eight-foot tall and able to survive extremes, I believe they would have already existed. Victor had no right to make something so against nature just like Hammond had no right to bring back to life what nature had already put into extinction. When Malcolm asks the question: “Don’t you see the danger, John, inherent in what you’re doing here?” then goes on to point out: “Genetic power is the most awesome force the planet’s ever seen – but you wield it like a kid that’s found his dad’s gun” (Jurassic Park) we can correlate this with Frankenstein while creating the creature. It wasn’t DNA he used but old body
