LOWERING THE DRINKING AGE OF 21 For many years people have tried to lower the drinking age country wide in the United States to 18. Their argument is if 18 years are allowed to join the military, vote and own weapons why cant they drink alcohol. Serving in the military at 18 is not the same as drinking at 18, one isn’t allowed to even handle weapons without months of hard training and new rules that hold them accountable. “The statement says "21 is not working" and asks "How many times must we relearn the lessons of Prohibition?" It draws comparisons to other age-of-majority rights conferred on 18 -yearolds, such as voting and serving in the military, and calls upon elected officials to consider "whether current public policies are in line with current realities” Main (2009) CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION Underage Drinking Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States.
