Lab Exercise. The Layers of the Earth Introduction The Earth is composed off 4 main layers: the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. The crust is the thin rocky surface layer of the Earth. The mantle is the very thick middle layer of the Earth, it makes up the majority of the Earth’s volume and mass. The outer core is the liquid metallic layer in the center of the Earth. The inner core is the solid metallic (iron) layer in the center of the Earth. Figure 1. The Layers of the Earth . The crust contains the continents and the oceans. The Continental Drift hypothesis states the world’s continents are in motion and have been drifting apart over geologic time.
