Israel Palestine today consists of Israel, West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Jews believe this is their land back 3,000 years when it was Jerusalem and ruled by Jewish kings. Palestinians (Christians and Muslims) gained control of the land in 135 AD. When they Jews were driven out. Jews moved from place and to place and dispersed around the globe (AKA Diaspora). In the 19 th century Jews began returning to their homeland. Zionists- people who favored a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Arabs believed this was their land dating back to the 7 th century. More and more Jews returned to Palestine in the 19 th and 20 th century. Palestinians were opposed to this. Palestinian and Jewish hostility. After WWII and aftermath of the Holocaust, the UN partition Palestine in to a Palestinian State and a Jewish State. Islamic nations (Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria) were opposed to this partition. Palestine was opposed to this partition. Day Israel was voted in as a new nation the Islamic Nations invaded. Arab-Israeli Wars. 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973 Palestinian homeland was never established as planned. Palestinians struggle for recognition and form the Palestine Liberation Organization PLO. Tension over the area continues today.

End of the 20 th Century = End of Empires WWII exposed people to democracy and natural desire for independence was inevitable Self Determination: right of a people or nation to determine its form of government without influence from the outside. Nationalism that drove the creation of colonial rule/imperialism was now the force causing the disintegration of colonial rule

Conjuncture Why did colonial rule end now? Conjuncture: several separate developments come together at a particular time. Combine all these present characteristics….and the outcome was independence. WW had weakened Europe and their moral superiority US and USSR were now world powers and opposed to colonial empires UN created a platform to discuss unfair colonial rule Western educated African and Asian elites were aware of the gap between European values and practices..and these young leaders believed colonization was no longer in their countries best interest Exploitation, resentment, poverty….people wanted more and believed independence was their best route. Individual leaders wanted to bring down the colonial system as well. European countries saw they could still maintain economic links without outright colonial rule. Independence…did it come from independence movements or from colonial ruling country?
