Written Assignment on Catholic Social Teaching Rerum Novarum helped the Church shift its approach to helping the poor and vulnerable people. What shift was made and how do you see this present in the Churches today? In history there have been many historical figures that have helped achieve the rights for the weak, poor, and vulnerable. However, the most significant individual that stands out is Pope Leo XIII; the publisher of Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor, an encyclical named Rerum Novarum . This open letter was passed to all Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops, as a response to the social conditions of Europe. He emphasized the social complications of the day. In mind of all the difficulties, he addressed five crucial issues: private property, the right of the Church to speak on social issues, the role of the state, the worker’s right to a just wage, and the importance of worker associations. In a society where class determines your worth, it is very difficult for the lower class to attain the same value and respect as the upper class as they are looked down upon.
