Nigeria is one of the richest countries in Africa but virtually majority of her citizens are livingin abject poverty. This paper examines the general orientation that education throughGuidance and Counselling can transform Nigeria into a country to be envied by others. Ittherefore started with the concept of Guidance and Counselling, the history, need, basicprinciples and services of Guidance and Counselling. The role of Guidance and Counsellingas a tool for national transformation in life skill education and human resource developmentwere highlighted. It was recommended among others that all schools should be provided withprofessionally qualified and adequately trained counselors and that universities should begiventhemandatetotrainmoreprofessionalsinthearea.What is Guidance and Counselling?1
Guidance can be defined as from the word “Guide” which means todirect, pilot, manager, steer, aid, assist, lead, and interact. Guidance according toOkon (1984) can be described as a total programme of highly specializedactivities implemented by all staff members to help individuals make wiseintelligent choices and decisions. Olayinka (1990) stated that within the schoolsystem, guidance is one of the services that help the school to achieve its aimsand helps the students to take full advantage of all facilities the school provides.For Shertzer and Stone (1984) guidance is a process of helping individuals tounderstand themselves and the world.Meaning of CounsellingOlayinka (1987) described counselling as a process by which a professionallytrained counselor assists the clients in a face to face encounter with the aim ofproviding educational, vocational, social emotional and moral assistance to himor her. Mallum (2002) also saw counseling as a specialty in the field ofpsychology whose practioners assist clients to improve their wellbeing, alleviatedistress, resolve crises and increase their ability to be creative, innovative andmake appropriate decisions.Therefore, while guidance is seen as a general label, an umbrella term thatcovers all the means whereby an institution identifies and responds to theindividual needs by helping the individual to develop his or her full potential,counseling on the other hand is a subset of the general term called guidance(Ipaye 1983).Historical Development of Guidance and counselling in NigeriaAfrican nations are in a hurry to educate citizens in order to modernize andenhance their social, economic and political development.
