MULTI-TEXT EVALUATIONS2 Title and Author: Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt Qualitative Measures Levels of Meaning/Purpose: This book has multiple levels of meaning with the protagonist, Jethro Creighton, feeling divided by his feelings towards both of his brothers, as well as his teacher. Meaning is also drawn from the Civil War theme in which is the time period when the story takes place. Genre & Structure: Across Five Aprils is a historical-fiction novel, written in narrative prose. There is the added value of personal letters written between the characters in which brings a certain dynamic to the story itself. Language Conventionality and Clarity: Most of the language used is understandable and clear, except for the occasional use of slang words from that time period that may need some explaining and clarifying for younger readers. Knowledge Demands: Some familiarity with the Civil War will help the reader understand the turmoil that was occurring in the homes of many families. It is important to recognize that families were divided, and because of this the war was very personal and devastating for our country. Additionally, students should recognize the responsibilities of children during that time, and identify the different types of relationships and their workings. Quantitative Measures Readability Formula Level : The Fry Readability Graph results showed that the average number of syllables in each portion of text from Across Five Aprils per 100 words was 142, and the average number of sentences was 3.5 per 100 words. The reading level is said to be at a 10thgrade level. This formula would lead me to believe that this text would not be appropriate for a struggling reader, and that their level of difficulty was high. After reading the text, I do not agree with this rating. The SMOG Formula showed the reading level of Across Five Aprils to be a 6.4, which is a 6thgrade level. I believe that this is an accurate representation of this book’s readability. A strong 4th- 5thgrade reader would enjoy this book if interested in historical fiction. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Formula determined this novel to be at a 10thgrade reading level. I believe this formula is also misleading in its interpretation of the level of difficulty that this book carries in its readability. Reader-Task Considerations Cognitive Capabilities: The students in this classroom are average to above average in cognitive ability, with the only exception being the 2 ESL students who still need greater language support. Reading Skills: Even though the reading levels suggest that the students should be 6-10thgrade reading levels, the students in this class are able to understand the text and read it at an acceptable pace and level. The 2 ESL students are unable to read this material and need someone to read the material to them.
