Orlando Brown Analysis & Critical Essay #2 Part 1: Analysis The Message – Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five ft. Melle Mel and Duke Bootee (pg. 73- 77) Producer: Sylvia Robinson Songwriters: Ed “Duke Bootee” Fletcher, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Sylvia Robinson, Clifton “Jiggs” Chase Source: Wikipedia Released July 1, 1982 Link: Intro: Instrumental Chorus It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder How I keep from going under It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder How I keep from going under This is a simile relates to New York, some people call it the concrete jungle and ‘going under’ means either giving up or dying Verse 1 Broken glass everywhere People pissing on the stairs, you know they just don't care I can't take the smell, I can't take the noise Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice Rats in the front room, roaches in the back In the first few lines of this verse, Melle Mel talks about how life is in New York City. Inner-city poverty was something a lot of black people had to deal with and struggled to escape poverty and everything that came with it Junkies in the alley with the baseball bat I tried to get away, but I couldn't get far Cause a man with a tow-truck repossessed my car I can assume he was about to get jumped by some junkies in the alley so he tried to run to his car, but realized his car was getting repossessed. This is what it’s like when you’re living in poverty, unfortunate things happen frequently. Hook Don't push me cause I'm close to the edge I'm trying not to lose my head, ah huh-huh-huh This is a figure of speech used by Melle Mel, meaning he’s almost at his breaking point because of all stress surrounding him. In the music video, he makes a gun symbol and points it at his head which could mean that he’s close to having suicidal thoughts. Chorus

It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder How I keep from going under Verse 2 Standing on the front stoop, hangin' out the window Watching all the cars go by, roaring as the breezes blow These lines create an sense of imagery of life in NYC, sitting on the front porch of a home with raised ground floors, watching the cars go past and feeling a summer breeze Crazy lady livin' in a bag Eating out of garbage pails, used to be a fag-hag A homeless lady living on the streets, eating out of the garbage. Before the lady became homeless, she was a fag hag, which is a lady who loves to be around gay men. Said she danced the tango, skipped the light fandango This is a reference from the first line of “A White Shade Of Pale” by Procol Harum and in that song they talk about seducing a women one night The Zircon Princess seemed to lost her senses Down at the peepshow, watching all the creeps So she can tell the stories to the girls back home She went to the city and got social security She had to get a pimp, she couldn't make it on her own The last 5 lines of this verse tell a story of a girl who thinks she’s important, but she isn’t.
