By: Orlando Brown Hip Hop America By: Nelson George Book Review Today, hip-hop is one of the most influential styles of music available. It has major influences on fashion, politics, sports and every socio-cultural category you think of. Hip-hop is everywhere you look. The evolution of hip-hop went from kids break dancing and local DJs creating their own mixture of music to becoming a multi-billion-dollar industry. Hip-hop wasn’t always as big as it is today. Many people have different theories about how hip-hop began and who were more influential than others. Nelson George (successfully) attempted to write a book that would discuss this phenomenon in its historical and cultural contexts. He also wanted to add a personal touch to give his readers raw and authentic emotions while walking them through the development of hip hop from its primitive origins to its complex and spirited migration into American pop culture in the late 90s. Before I get into the book and what it’s about, Nelson George deserves a brief biography. Nelson (born in 1979 in Brooklyn, New York) is a well-established Black author and filmmaker who has a passion for putting the black experience in forms of stories to show the world. He is also a famous music/culture critic and journalist. Nelson has written a number of award winning books that talks about the histories of past/present African American musicians and the development (and fall) of certain styles of hip hop. He has also produced a number of TV shows and films for ESPN, HBO, BET, VH1, and more. Hip-Hop America is one of Nelson George’s critically books. The book was released two decades ago (1998) during the time when Hip-Hop was fully integrated into mainstream music. When Nelson wrote this book, he set out to contextualize hip hop for fan, critics, and anybody with an interest in either hip hop or America in general. This was during the time when MTV was playing Puff Daddy (now known as P. Diddy), Will Smith, Notorious B.I.G, and Busta Rhymes alongside with artists like Madonna, Metallica, Aerosmith, and Foo Fighters.
