COUN 610 DB 1 OPTION 1: Using Brickman’s chapter on Kinsey and by researching additional material on Kinsey, create a convincing argument challenging the use of Kinsey’s material for educating children and teens about sex (do not use the Scriptures as a resource). Afterward, incorporate a biblical worldview in your response. Alfred Kinsey’s work in the area of human sexuality changed the course of history and how sex education is now taught in the United States. Kinsey believed that scientific knowledge about sex would set people free from oppressive morals, shame and inhibition so that they could experience sexual pleasure in whatever ways they would like to explore; Kinsey believed this was everyone’s natural birthright (Winkler, 2005). The sexuality information and education council of the united states (SIECUS) was launched in 1964 by the Kinsey institute and Dr. Mary Calderone, medical director for the Planned Parenthood Federation (Brickman, 2004). In 1991 the SIECUS issued guidelines for current sexual education curriculum based on Kinsey’s research and proposed that it only be taught by Kinsey-trained teachers (Brickman, 2004). According to Brickman (2004), Kinsey used unethical methodologies and unqualified personnel throughout his experiments. It was stated that Kinsey gathered much of his information in his studies through interviews with sex offenders, pedophiles and serial rapists (Brickman, 2004). Kinsey believed that rape was a crime most easily forgotten by its victims and children that were molested sustained less harm then they would have by a hysterical mother (Brinkman, 2004). Kinsey also concluded from his interviews with pedophiles that adult sexual contact can be pleasurable for children and even infants (Reisman,2014). Kinsey stated that this research proves that children are sexual at birth (Brickman, 2004). This data that Kinsey relied on was actually illegal sexual abuse of children (Reisman,2014). If the general population was to consider who and how they would like their children to be educated on human sexuality, it is this authors educated guess; as both a parent and former health education teacher, that most parents would not like their children to receive any sort of information from a rapist or pedophile, especially, sexual education. Kinsey possessed no credential in the field of psychology, anatomy, or even biology; Kinsey was a zoologist. Understanding how the animal
