Justin ReardonSurvey of U.S. HistoryTask #3A.Race RelationsThree major events in race relations came from the Reconstruction era.One of them was the passing of the thirteenth amendment. The thirteenthamendment abolished involuntary slavery and gave Congress the power to enforce by “appropriate legislation”. With the passing of the thirteenth amendment slaves would become free for good and no longer had any responsibility to their owner. This event changed history and was a change for the right direction. This amendment only narrowly passed the two-thirds needed for a new amendment. Women groups were instrumental in getting the votes needed to pass. Those women were Susan B. Anthony, Elisabeth Cady Stanton and Woman’s Loyal Nation League. This event is one of the most historical changes in our history of this county. (Norton,2015)A second event that happen to help change race relations during the reconstruction era was the Freedmen’s Bureau. The Freedmen’s Bureau was an agency that congress made to help the newly freedmen out. They would supply food and medical services to them. Also they would negotiate contracts between the freedmen and their former owners. They built thousands of schools and even some colleges. Not all were in favor of this agency. The southern white men hated it. Some politicians thought it was unconstitutional. (Norton,2015)A third event that helped change race relations was sharecropping. Thesharecropping system was were white land owners would basically supply seed and animals to the black workers to work the land. Each worker now
was responsible for the land and would have to pay a portion back to the owner. This would supply the land owners with workers and gave the black free men land to work as they couldn’t find land to buy. The sharecropping system would be beneficial to both parties. Blacks were no longer supervised and the land owners had a permanent and dependable work force. However, it wouldn’t last. As the crops, mainly cotton, declined in need, the landowners would eventually become sharecroppersthemselves as they had to sell their land. (Norton,2015)B. Industrialization One consequence of the industrialization era was how labor changed. Labor was paid based off of quality and craftsmanship.
