1 SOCI 254: DEVELOPMENT AND UNDERDEVELOPMENT Tuesdays and Thursdays, 16.05pm-17.25pm: ENGMC-204 Instructor: Ali Zeren Email: [email protected] Office Hours: Lea-822A, Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:00pm-1:00pm Teaching Assistants: Alicia Poole ( [email protected] ) Tay Jeong ( [email protected] ) DESCRIPTION The purpose of this course is to introduce students to various concepts, issues, debates, and key actors of socio-economic development. In doing so, it also aims to provide an overview of historical development experiences across different periods and geographies. The course is centred on a sociological perspective, but it frequently incorporates insights from political economy and history as well. READINGS: All the readings for this class will be available online on MyCourses. EVALUATION: Your grade assessment will be based on the following: 1 st Exam, Feb-12 – 20% 2 nd Exam, Mar-19 – 25% In-class exercises and participation: 20% (see below) Final: TBA – 35% In-class exercises and participation (20%): It is strongly encouraged that you attend lectures. Through the semester there will be a number of exercises that you are be required to complete. Typically, you will be asked either to upload your response on MyCourses by the end of the day or hand it in at the beginning of the subsequent lecture. These exercises will range from simple interpretation of graphs and data to writing 200-400 word essays. The exercises will be announced only one lecture prior to their conduct; however, specific instructions will be disseminated only on the day. Each exercise’s weight on your overall grade will range from 1% to 5%. Their purpose is to change the pace of lectures at times
