CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Social Networking Sites are virtual communities where users can create individual public profiles, interact with real-life friends, meet other people based on shared interests. They are seen as a “global phenomenon” with an exponential rise in usage within last few years. Social Networking Sites is one of the main indicators of the technology era, attracts people of all ages while the virtual world goes beyond the real life via the application it offers. In the Century, we live in which is called the Digital Age, computer and internet have gained an absolutely central importance in human life and Social Media had a prominent role in this picture. Besides easy, cheap and fast access to information through computers and the internet, the expansion of the communication network is one of the factors that lead individuals to use social media. This is hardly a young person in the world who does not possesses a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter account. We used Social Media primarily for communications and entertainment. We chat, upload photos and video files, read articles about various topics and play video games. The absolute number of the internet users cannot say how many hours they spend on social websites per day. They check their accounts periodically throughout the day trying to read messages from their friends or look at the new photo uploaded by their colleagues and relatives. Without question, we waste much time on social media involuntarily. We check the updates in our Facebook accounts even if we do not 2

want to do it. Therefore, it is will not be a mistake to claim that social media websites are enormously additive. Statistics shows that active social media users in the world are estimated at about two thousand two hundred and six (2,206) billion, a global diffusion of 30% which is rise in number of users by about one hundred and seventy-six (176) million users in the last year alone.( ) Boyd and Ellison (2007) define social media as a “public web based service that permits users to create a personal profile, identify other users with whom they can relate to or have a connection with, read and react to posts made by other users on the site and send and receive messages either privately or publicly” And according to Kuss and Griffiths (2011) also define social media as “virtual communities where users can create individual public profiles, interact with real-life friends and meet other people based on shared interests”.
