2 EU-Colombia/ Peru TA Effect on Sex Trafficking Abstract This paper will discuss a brief background of Colombia as country, including an in depth look at the economy’s current state. Also the paper will include a description and analysis of the EU- Colombia/Peru Trade Agreement, along with the agreement’s direct influence on the major social issue of sex trafficking in Colombia. Finally the paper will conclude with how Samaritan’s purse can mobilize relief for sex trafficking in Colombia.

3 EU-Colombia/ Peru TA Effect on Sex Trafficking Introduction Regional Trade Agreements are often set in place to create better initiatives and an all- around better environment for the countries involved. The EU-Colombia/Peru Trade Agreement sought to do just that by working in main areas with specific a specific plan of action to help develop the involved countries. However, since the institution of the agreement, the country of Colombia has seen a drastically negative impact on the major social issue of sex trafficking particularly due to the porous borders created by the regional trade a agreement, but many other factors continue to contribute to the impending epidemic. Description and Discussion of Colombia Brief Overview and Background Colombia was one of three countries that emerged after the dissolution of Gran Colombia in 1830, and after decades the country finally came to peace with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in November of 2016. The Colombian economy began to flourish, and Colombian politics began to form on their own rather than at the mercy of the FARC. Economy The Colombian economy heavily depends on both energy and mining exports, which makes it subject to extreme vulnerability, but at its current state Colombia is Latin America’s fourth largest oil producer, and the world’s largest coal producer (“The World Fact Book”, 2019). Although the Colombian economy is currently thriving, the country has weathered many economic storms along its path to success. In 2017, the economy began to slow up, “due to the
