Updike’s Revolution: Conformity vs. Rebellion Sometimes, people will make remarkable actions when it comes to defending what they believe is right. This can be seen in John Updike’s story, “A&P,” where the narrator, Sammy, happens to quit his job, after seeing what he believes to be an act of hostility taken towards three young girls who enter the store in their bathing suits. During the story, the setting takes place in a small Massachusetts town (during the early 1960’s) at an A&P grocery store, which happens to be where Sammy works. The conflict comes into place when Sammy is working and he notices how shocked the customers are by the girls’ choice of dress. The situation deepens as the girls are in Sammy’s check-out line ready to pay and his manager, Lengel, tells them they aren’t dressed appropriately for the A&P grocery store. After seeing the embarrassed looks the girls had held, Sammy didn’t like the way they were being antagonized by Lengel and decided to quit his job. Throughout the story, there are many examples of transformations once these young ladies enter the A&P store. Primarily, the affect these girls have on Sammy and his behavior is one of the first noticeable changes in the story. In the story, Sammy states, “I stood with my hand on a box of HiHo crackers trying to remember if I rang it up or not. I ring it up again and the customer starts giving me hell. . . She’d been watching cash registers for forty years and probably never seen a mistake before,” (Updike, paragraph one). Within the very first paragraph of the story, you can see the distraction the young girls in the bathing suits have already made on
