AOS-330 MAJOR Course Objectives Relevant to the First Midterm The following is not an exhaustive list. It gives highlights only -- the essential knowledge required to do reasonably well on the exam. As always, it will be assumed that you have carefully read and understood the assigned reading. This does not mean that I expect a lot of rote memorization -- your goal should not be to cram your head full of detailed facts and formulas but rather to strive for comprehension . Be VERY familiar with the ideas in Appendix A. A surprising number of students in past years have lost big points on the first exam by not internalizing some of the key points of this section - symbolic solutions, dimensional consistency, proper use of numerical precision. Be able to identify the major constituents of the atmosphere and characterize their relative abundance and variability (it is not necessary to memorize the percentages except for maybe the top four, to the nearest percent). Be able to explain the physical basis of temperature , including the concept of absolute zero . Be familiar with the three temperature scales we encounter in meteorology, including the conversions between them. Understand the difference between the homosphere and the heterosphere and give the
