1 Guide 7 Inquiry Question - Does money drive motivation in the today’s workplace? Maxwell Johnston Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory Abraham Maslow, the creator of the hierarchy of needs theory, believes that each need must be sequentially met from the bottom to the top (Physiological Needs, Safety Needs, Social Needs, Esteem Needs, Self-Actualization). Opportunities for need satisfaction create positive motivational effects; careers and workplaces that fulfill more needs in the hierarchy tend to motivate employees more. According to this, money or compensation would fall under the safety needs only being the second step in the hierarchy. If only two lower-order needs (physiological needs and safety needs) are being met in an employee's workplace there will be a weak motivational impact as the employee will most likely crave to fulfill the higher-order needs, as according to the deficit principle satisfied needs lose their motivational impact, in the hierarchy. Purely extrinsic rewards for work is not enough to satisfy most workers in the workplace, some level of intrinsic reward must be present for proper employee motivation. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory money doesn’t fully drive motivation in the workplace, people have more needs.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
