Poli 100 Lecture 7 Democracy and the Changing Media Environment “The way we were” Single genre- “News” o If it wasn’t labeled as news, it wouldn’t have to do with politics Single authority- “Journalists” o Journalists were the only source for political info, only people trusted to do so o Because they were professionals and the only ones dealing with politics o We trusted them to be unbiased and honest Single “Marketplace of ideas” – National Dominance of broadcast media o Print media was taken over by TV and Radio as the main source of info The new Media environment Blurring the line between “News” and Entertainment Multiple Authorities o Who are the new authorities Bloggers, People on youtube, Celebrities, etc. Not even necessarily professionals o What are the consequences Only journalists are meant to be objective (their job) Therefore, a lot of the news now is biased but not clearly However, we only have the sources that we have, so we must use them
