Civil Society and Citizens What is a civil society? All institutions and social networks that stand between government and the private world Social capital Central Premise: Social networks have value “Social Capital” : the “collective value” of social networks and their consequences Person cannot have it, it’s attributed to the society How it works: information is shared, identities developed through common ground, social norms develop A nation of Joiners? 19 th Century 20 th Century Declining Organizational Involvement o Bowling alone, Robert D. Putnam People used to join organizations but during the last 35-ish years, this declined rapidly o Political Org o Civic Org o Overall numbers haven’t really gone down, but overall quality is lowered o Churches Against the “tide”- small groups, social movements, and the internet Explaining the decline in Civic engagement and Social capital
