Poli 100 Lecture 10 Negative Campaigning Making vote choices What shapes a decision to vote? o Issues Voter has to know where they stand Candidate has to take a stand as well Candidate also has to communicate their position o Party o Image Character Personality Leadership Rationality of Image voting o Doesn’t seem smart o However, if the candidate is not trustworthy or not strong enough to follow through, it can be a negative thing to simply look at the issues o Therefore it is a good idea to at least consider the image of the candidate Campaigns o Try and win over enough independents as well as hold the R/D party o Must use issues and image to accomplish this Campaigning in the Media Age 19 th Century o Lord Bryce notes that it was full of mudslinging and such o Rise in negativism New Rules of Political Engagement Advertise early if you have enough money
