What is a definition of family that encompasses the different family structures prevalent today? Discuss the importance of acknowledging nontraditional family structures. Explainhow family systems theory can be used to better understand the interactions of a modern family (traditional or nontraditional). “A traditional definition of a family is the parents and offspring living together as a societal or social unit with the same ancestry (Whitney, 2018, para 2). In present day society family can consist of many varieties throughout the unit. Many households are headed by the grand-parents who care for their grandchildren. Others may contain fostered or adopted children that are incorporated into the family unit. To define today’s family units is to include all the previous societal norms such as, the nuclear or family or origin, along with more recent ones. Some of which includes: blended, single-parent (including LGBTQ+), multigenerational families, as well as families of choice (Whitney, 2018).
