Casey Kinner Anthony W. Rintala English 104-200 November 4, 2007 In all history, man has saught wisdom and knowledge above all else. In this search for understanding, reading has captivated and enticed the minds of Americans young and old alike. For up to the mid twentieth century, books have served as the primary medium to educate and entertain us. However, in the last few decades, technology has radically changed the way we learn and how we tell stories. Countless television shows, movies, music, and the vast information available on the Internet, have taken precedence over the reading of books. As Ray Bradbury prophetically describes in Farenheit 451 , technology has replaced our love of true knowledge and reading to a desire to be entertained. Montag, the central character in Farenheit 451 , spends much of his life as a fire- man, burning books without the slightest real knowledge why he is burning them, nor of the wisdom they contain. However, when Montag meets a young girl who insists on bugging him with questions about life, books, and love, Montag merely laughs, as he struggles to take them seriously. However, one day, she asks “ Are you happy?” (Bradbury 10). This questions bothers Montag, as he ponders to himself, “Of course I’m happy. What does she think? I’m not?” As days pass, Montag realizes that he isn’t happy,
