Casey Kinner February 31, 2008 Chemistry 107-527 Experiment 1: Conservation Laws Summary: The purpose of this experiment is to explore whether mass and volume are conserved when two substances are mixed, give the experimenter experience in many lab techniques such as the handling of liquids and the use of analytical balances, and also give the experimenter practice in lab procedures and measurement errors. The experiment entailed repeatedly measuring the masses and volumes of different quantities of water and acetone separately. The masses and volumes were also repeatedly measure when these compounds were combined. The data from the separate liquids and the data of the combined solution were then compared to determine whether the mass and volume was indeed conserved. The experiment overall supported the statement that mass and volume and conserved.
