10-17-06 Macro Level Proxy Measure – infant mortality rates, life expectation rates, # of doctors / 1000 people – indicators to us of the health, wellbeing, & economic picture of a whole country. Demographers – do statistical stuff Birth Rate – the # of live births / 1000 people in the population Death Rate - # of deaths / 1000 people Infant Mortality Rate - # of deaths of children less than a year old / 1000 people – tells of the level of medical care, may explain birth rate, effected by education, contraception => religion. Stratification – structured inequality, built into a system over time. Every single society has been stratified. What differs is how it’s stratified. Mostly by age & gender. Some are based on ascribed characteristics, and some are based on achieved characteristics. Continuum of stratification. Feudal system => class systems. Slavery can and has occurred in any of these types of stratified societies. Feudal system – ownership of land is an inherited ability.
