10-31-06 Tanzaia video - HIV/AIDS, world stratification Billy Elliot – US stratification Stratification means inequality, structured inequality. Inequality is part of the system. Stratification Systems create majority and minority groups. Most of the time a majority group is a majority in numbers, but that is not always the case. The real concept is power & control over resources. Mostly about POWER. Stratification is everywhere, in every society that has been studied. The difference is on what basis you stratify. Generally speaking, stratification is on achieved statuses or ascribed statuses. US stratification – ideology (very strong) that you earn what class you are in. Rather, we are stratified by social class, race, & gender. Create groups of have and have not. The US worldwide use the most energy, produce the most energy, produce health care per capita (but misleading b/c of social class). US stratification by social class. Class, Race, and Gender are very closely linked & intertwined.
