Unformatted text preview: 11-28-06MYTH: education can be run like a normal businessThe love of learning has nothing to do w/ corporate dynamicsCurrent issues in education:Tracking: put on different tracks from a very early age (<-negative) as to what your future aspirations will be. Very little changing your track once you are put into it. You are placed according into your scores on a test in the 4thgrade into high or low achieving tracks. That is placed in stone by the 8thgrade. High achieving track in HS lead to AP courses which lead to a better chance at getting into college, and the track continues. Tracks are very closely correlated to your family, family income, family background, family class.Funding: Schools in the US are funded at the local level. At least half of the funding is based on property taxes. Predominantly black schools used to use the used textbooks from predominantly white schools when the white schools got new textbooks....
